Kashmiri kesar price per gram (September 2026)
| Pack | Price | Per gram |
|---|---|---|
| 1 gram Mongra | ₹530 | ₹530 |
| 2 gram Mongra | ₹930 | ₹465 |
| 3 gram Mongra | ₹1,550 | ₹517 |
| 5 gram Mongra | ₹2,599 | ₹520 |
| 1 gram GI-tagged pack | ₹1,000 | ₹1,000 |
The GI-tagged pack is the same grade of Mongra. It costs more for the origin documentation, not for different threads. For everyday cooking the standard pack is the sensible buy.
Kesar price per kg and bulk rates
For sweet shops, hotels, caterers and resellers we sell the same Mongra in bulk, from 30 grams upward. At the 1 kg level the rate works out to about ₹380 per gram (₹3,80,000 per kg). Current bulk packs and rates are on the saffron wholesale page, or message us on WhatsApp for a quote.
Why one gram of kesar can cost very different amounts
- Origin. Imported saffron sold under a Kashmiri label is much cheaper to produce. Kashmir grows only a few tonnes a year.
- Grade. Mongra is the deep-red stigma tip only. Lacha keeps the pale style attached, which adds weight but little colour, so it sells cheaper per gram.
- Age. Older stock loses aroma and is often discounted.
- Adulteration. Dyed corn silk, safflower and oiled threads are sold as kesar at prices genuine saffron cannot reach.
- Paperwork. Lab testing and GI documentation add cost but also add proof.

How to tell if a price is too low
- Compare the per-gram price of Mongra from three or four established Kashmir-based sellers.
- If a listing is far below that range, ask what grade it is, when it was packed and whether a lab report exists.
- At home, drop a few threads in warm water: real saffron releases colour slowly and the thread stays red. The full set of checks is in how to identify real Kashmiri saffron.
How much kesar do you actually need?
A gram is several hundred threads. A family biryani or a pot of kheer needs ten to twenty threads, so one gram lasts most households a month or more. Buying a small pack more often keeps the aroma fresh. See how much saffron to buy and how to store saffron.
Common questions
What is the price of 1 gram kesar in India?
It varies widely with grade and origin, so compare per-gram rates rather than pack prices. Our Kashmiri Mongra is ₹530 for 1 gram as of September 2026.
What is the kesar rate per kg?
Bulk Kashmiri Mongra is priced per gram on a sliding scale. At 1 kg our rate is ₹3,80,000, about ₹380 per gram.
Why is Kashmiri kesar more expensive than Iranian?
Kashmir's crop is small and harvested entirely by hand in a two to three week window, while Iran produces far larger volumes. Supply, not quality claims, drives most of the difference.
Does saffron price change every year?
Yes. A dry autumn means a smaller crop and higher prices until the next harvest in late October and November.
