Kashmiri Kurtis
Kurtis carrying real Kashmiri handwork — hand-embroidered in Pampore, on cotton, in Aari, Sozni and Tilla. Long and short. There is no shortage of kurtis online; there is a shortage of kurtis where a person actually held the needle.
Every product page names the technique. That is deliberate: "Kashmiri embroidered" means nothing on its own, and most of what carries the label was made by a machine head somewhere else.
₹1,300 – ₹2,900
The spread is not fabric — it is hours. A worked neckline in Aari is days. The Sozni piece at the top of the range is a different craft entirely, and it took correspondingly longer.
Long or short
- Long kurtis — straight-cut, full length, in summer cotton. Worn to work, worn to a festival, worn on a Sunday.
- Short kurtis — Aari work, plus one Tilla piece in mustard. The everyday end of the range.
Three techniques on this page
- Aari — hook-worked chain stitch. Most of what you see here: floral sprays, worked necklines, running borders.
- Sozni — needle-worked, stitch by stitch, far finer and far slower. One piece: the rose peach paisley kurti.
- Tilla — metallic thread laid on the surface, catching light. One piece: the mustard short kurti.
Colours in this collection
Black, olive green, moss green, mauve, rose peach, rust, sky blue, off-white and mustard — floral and paisley motifs, worked at the neckline or across the ground.
Questions people ask us
What is a Kashmiri kurti?
A kurti carrying Kashmiri hand embroidery — most often Aari, the hook-worked chain stitch also called Zalakdozi. The cut is a familiar straight kurti; what makes it Kashmiri is the handwork on it and the karigars who did it.
What is Aari work on a kurti?
The artisan works from the face of the fabric with a fine hook, pulling thread up in a continuous chain stitch. It sits close to the fabric, so it does not stiffen the garment — which is why it suits a kurti you plan to wear regularly rather than once a year.
Is Aari work done by hand or machine?
Ours is done entirely by hand. Machine chain stitch exists and is common in the market — it is flat on the reverse and its motifs repeat identically. Turn the garment over and compare two motifs; handwork varies slightly, machines do not.
What is Sozni, and why does it cost more?
Sozni is needlework — one stitch at a time, with a fine needle rather than a hook. It is far slower than Aari and demands more of the karigar. The rose peach kurti here is the only Sozni piece in the collection, and its price reflects the hours in it.
Which kurti is best for summer?
All of these are on cotton, which is the point. Loose-cut, breathable ground, handwork that does not add weight.
How do I wash an embroidered kurti?
Cold hand wash, mild detergent, no wringing, dry in shade. Care details are on each product page.
Are these really made in Kashmir?
Yes. We are in Kadlabal, Pampore, and we buy from the karigars directly — no middle agent, no machine substitute.
