Using & Keeping What You Bought

Almost everything we sell is unrefined and minimally processed. Handled right it lasts months and tastes the way it should. This is the short, practical version — what to do, what to store it in, and what is normal versus what is actually a problem.

S

SaffronKesar · Crocus sativus

Saffron is not a sprinkling spice. Dropped dry into a dish it sits on top, stays red, and gives you almost nothing. Colour and aroma only release into liquid.

Do this

Crush 3–4 threads, soak in 1–2 tbsp warm milk or water for 10–15 minutes until the liquid turns gold, then add the whole thing to your dish.

Not this

Sprinkling threads dry over the top, or boiling them hard. Over-saffroning turns food faintly bitter and medicinal.

  • You need far less than you think. One gram is roughly 15–20 servings.
  • Storage: airtight, away from light and heat — a cupboard, not the window sill. Do not refrigerate; condensation is saffron's enemy.

Check it yourself

Put a few threads in room-temperature water. Real saffron releases gold slowly over several minutes and the threads stay red. Dyed material bleeds red immediately and the threads go pale. Run this on ours, and on anyone else's.

K

Kahwa & Kesari Milk MasalaBrewing

Do this

Boil the water first, take it off the heat, add the kahwa mix, cover and let it stand 2–3 minutes.

Not this

Boiling it like chai. That sends the saffron and cardamom aroma up with the steam and leaves the bitterness behind.

  • No milk in kahwa. Sweeten lightly, or not at all.
  • Crushed almonds go in the cup — they are part of the drink, not decoration.
  • Milk masala: stir into hot milk and let it stand a minute so the ground nuts open up. We leave the sugar out deliberately — sweeten to your own taste.
R

ShilajitResin & liquid drops

Please read first

Shilajit is a traditional Ayurvedic preparation, not a medicine. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking prescription medication or managing an existing health condition, speak to your doctor before use. Not for children.

  • Resin goes hard in cold weather — this is normal. Stand the closed jar in warm water for a few minutes, or hold it in your hands, and it softens.
  • Take a rice-grain sized portion, dissolve it fully in warm water or milk, and drink. Do not chew it.
  • The liquid drops are pre-diluted. Do not carry the resin quantity over to the drops — follow the bottle.
  • Colour and texture vary between batches because it is natural rock material. Jars that look identical every single time deserve more scrutiny, not less.
  • Clean, dry spoon every time. Lid closed.
H

HoneyAcacia · Apple blossom · Sulai

Crystallisation is normal. Natural honey sets over time; heavily processed honey stays permanently clear because it has been treated to. Acacia is naturally slow to set, darker honeys set faster.

Do this

To loosen set honey, stand the closed jar in warm water. Always use a dry spoon and keep it at room temperature.

Not this

Never boil it and never microwave it — heat destroys the aroma you paid for. Do not refrigerate.

Safety

Do not give honey to a child under one year of age.

N

Dry Fruits & NutsStorage and freshness

Nuts don't spoil dramatically — they go quietly rancid, and most people keep eating them without realising. Oil-rich nuts turn fastest.

Item How to store Notes
Walnut kernels, chilgoza, shelled nuts Airtight, refrigerator or freezer Cold storage buys you months
Almonds, cashews, pista Airtight, cool dark cupboard Refrigerate through peak summer
In-shell nuts Cool, dry, airy — not sealed in plastic The shell is doing the preserving
Dates, figs, apricots, raisins Airtight; refrigerate in humid weather Refrigeration firms them, which is fine
  • White bloom on figs is fruit sugar, not mould. Sugar bloom is dry, powdery, evenly spread and rubs off. Mould is fuzzy, patchy and smells wrong.
  • A sharp or paint-like smell means the nut has turned. Discard it — that is not a taste to push through.
  • Soaking almonds overnight and slipping off the skin makes them softer and milder. A preference, not a rule.
  • Dried apricots that are pale rather than bright orange have not been sulphur-treated. Uniform bright orange is the treated look.
G

GuchiDried wild morel

  • Rinse quickly, then soak in warm water for 20–30 minutes until soft.
  • Keep the soaking water. Most of the flavour is in it — strain it to leave the grit behind and add the liquid to your dish.
  • The hollow interior is the nature of the mushroom, not a defect.
  • Store dry and airtight, away from moisture.
O

OilsAlmond, walnut & essential oils

  • Almond oil is the light one. 3–4 drops is the entire dose for the face. A greasy result is almost always a quantity problem, not an oil problem.
  • Walnut oil is heavier and slower to absorb — which makes it the overnight oil for dry hair and dry skin rather than a morning face oil.
  • Warm a little between the palms, press into damp skin or work into the scalp, leave 30 minutes or overnight, then wash.
  • Rancidity: a sharp or paint-like smell means the bottle has turned. Discard it. Store away from sunlight and heat.
  • Patch test on the inner arm before first use.
Essential oils

An essential oil is not a body oil. It is highly concentrated and must be diluted in a carrier before it touches skin — never apply it neat.

Use How much
Diffuser 3–5 drops in water
On skin 1–2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil (almond or walnut)
Linen & laundry 2–3 drops on a cloth — never directly on fabric you care about

Keep away from eyes. Not for infants or pets, and avoid during pregnancy unless your doctor says otherwise.

C

SkincareOrder, dosage & honest limits

All our skincare is cosmetic care. It helps skin look better cared for. It does not change your complexion, and we will not tell you otherwise.

The order

Cleanse → rose water → serum → cream. Oils last, at night.

  • Patch test first. Inner arm, 24 hours, before anything goes on your face.
  • Apply on damp skin. This one free habit improves almost any cream or serum. Hyaluronic serums in particular need damp skin — on dry skin in a dry room they can leave the face feeling tighter, not softer.
  • A serum without a cream over it is half a routine. If you can only buy one, buy the cream.
  • Scrub once a week, no more. Damp skin, light circles, 30 seconds — the grains are the tool, your hand is not. Over-scrubbing strips skin and makes oiliness worse. Skip it on active acne or broken skin, and moisturise afterwards.
  • Kumkumadi oil is night-only. 2–3 drops is the whole dose, pressed in rather than rubbed. Note it can lightly tint pale bedding.
  • Scalp serum goes on the scalp, parted section by section — not on the lengths, where it does nothing.
  • Oily skin still needs moisturiser. A cleanser that leaves skin feeling tight has stripped it, and stripped skin makes more oil.

Embroidered ClothingWashing, ironing & storage

Our kaftans, kurtis and shrugs carry Kashmiri-style embroidery worked by machine on cotton and poly-cotton. Cared for simply, the threadwork stays sharp for years.

Do this

Cold water, gentle wash, inside out. Hand wash is safest; if machining, use a laundry bag on a delicate cycle. Dry in shade.

Not this

Hot water, bleach, hard sun, or a hot iron pressed straight onto the threadwork.

  • Strong colours release a little dye in the first two or three washes. That is the dye settling, not a defect — wash them separately and never soak them alongside lighter clothes.
  • Off-white and ivory: never bleach. Bleach yellows cotton over time and damages embroidery thread.
  • Metallic Tilla work: never iron directly on the thread. It flattens and dulls permanently. Iron the reverse, on low, around the motifs.
  • Crushed cotton is meant to look crinkled. Do not iron it flat — the crinkle is the drape you paid for.
  • Wash matching sets together so both pieces fade at the same rate.
  • Store folded rather than hung — a heavy embroidered garment stretches on a hanger over time.
