Kashmiri Tilla work

Tilla is the dressiest of the Kashmiri embroidery styles — gold or silver metallic thread couched onto cloth in traditional valley motifs. It was historically the wedding-pheran craft, which is why Tilla still reads as celebration clothing rather than everyday clothing. Flat cotton threadwork sits on the fabric; Tilla catches the light and moves with you.

How our Tilla pieces are actually made

The Tilla work in this collection is machine embroidery in traditional Kashmiri Tilla motifs — not hand Tilla. We say it plainly because hand Tilla takes an artisan days per garment in real metallic thread and prices in the many thousands. Anyone selling hand Tilla at ordinary kurti prices is not telling you the truth. What you are buying here is the Kashmiri design language and the metallic finish, at a price that lets you wear it more than once a year.

Where Tilla fits

Wedding functions, Eid, festive evenings, parties and family celebrations. Because the threadwork is the statement, Tilla suits and kurtis pair best with plain trousers and a simple dupatta — heavy prints alongside them fight for attention.

Tilla, Aari, Sozni and Crewel

Kashmiri embroidery is not one craft, and the names describe different techniques rather than different quality grades.

Caring for metallic thread

  • Never iron directly on the Tilla. Press on the reverse, or over a cotton cloth — direct heat flattens and dulls the metal permanently.
  • Never brush or scrub the embroidered area.
  • Gentle hand wash in cold water, mild detergent, no soaking.
  • Dry in shade. Strong sun takes the shine off metallic thread.
  • Store folded with the threadwork facing inwards.

Questions we get asked

Is this hand embroidery?

No. The Tilla work here is machine embroidery in traditional Kashmiri motifs, and we state that on every product page too. Genuine hand Tilla is a different product at a different price — if you want a hand-worked piece made to order, message us on WhatsApp and we will quote it honestly.

Will the gold thread come off?

Not with normal wear. It suffers from two things: direct ironing and scrubbing. Follow the care list above and the thread keeps its shine for years.

Can I wear Tilla to a wedding?

That is exactly what it is for. Tilla sits at the formal end of Kashmiri ethnic wear, so it works for wedding functions, Eid and festive evenings without needing much else styled around it.

How do I choose a size?

Sizes are listed on each product page. If you are between sizes or want measurements checked before ordering, send us your measurements on WhatsApp and we will tell you which size to take.

Do you ship outside India?

Yes. International shipping is charged separately from the product price, and we tell you the amount before you pay anything.

Not sure which piece to pick?

Send us a message. We will tell you what is in stock, what suits the occasion, and which size to take.
