Kashmiri Mongra Saffron: Product Details
Every saffron flower carries three red stigmas joined to a pale yellow style. The red part holds the colour, aroma and flavour; the pale part adds weight but very little else. Mongra — also called Mongra kesar — is the cut where that pale base is removed, so everything you weigh out is the working red portion.
The threads are dry, brittle and deep crimson, with a warm honey-and-hay aroma when the pack is opened. A few threads soaked in warm liquid turn it golden within minutes, which is why a small pack goes a long way in milk, kahwa, biryani, pulao, kheer and phirni.

Check It Yourself: The Warm Water Test
- Drop 3–4 threads into a glass of warm water and watch.
-
Real saffron releases a golden-yellow colour slowly, spreading over several minutes. The threads stay red at first.
- After a long soak the threads turn pale — that means the colour has fully moved into the water, not that something is wrong.
-
Dyed or fake saffron bleeds red or orange streaks within seconds, and the water turns reddish rather than gold.
Run it on our saffron too. A home test is a useful first check, not a lab result — for that, see our published report.

How to Use Mongra Saffron
One rule for everything: soak first, never sprinkle dry threads straight into food. Crush them lightly between your fingers, soak, then add the liquid and the threads. Amounts below are starting points — adjust to taste.
Milk
Soak 6–8 threads in two spoons of warm milk for 10 minutes, then stir into a glass of warm milk. Sweeten lightly.
Kahwa
Boil the water first, take it off the heat, then add green tea, cardamom and 3–4 threads per cup. Steep 2–3 minutes — don't keep boiling.
Biryani & pulao
Soak a pinch (10–15 threads) in 3–4 spoons of warm milk for 15–20 minutes. Drizzle over the top layer of rice before dum.
Kheer, phirni & sweets
Add soaked saffron with its liquid in the last few minutes of cooking. For sweets, grind threads with a pinch of sugar first.
Storage and Best-Before
- Close the container tightly after every use.
- Keep it in a cool, dark, dry cupboard — away from the stove and sunlight. Light fades saffron faster than time does.
- Use dry fingers or a dry spoon; moisture spoils threads.
- Use by the best-before date printed on your pack.

Questions
What is Kashmiri Mongra saffron?
Mongra is the cut of Kashmiri saffron where only the deep-red stigma tip is kept and the pale yellow base of each thread is removed. You pay only for the part that gives colour, aroma and flavour.
What is the difference between Mongra and Lacha?
Both are real saffron. Mongra is the red stigma tip only. Lacha keeps part of the pale style attached, so the threads are longer, cost less per gram and give less colour from the same weight. We sell both.
Which pack sizes are available?
1 g, 2 g, 3 g and 5 g. For larger quantities see our saffron wholesale range.
What is the current price per gram?
The pack table above shows the live price and price per gram for every pack, with the cheapest per gram marked as best value.
Where is this saffron sourced and packed?
Grown in Pampore, sourced directly from saffron-growing families, and graded and packed at our shop in Namblabal, Pampore.
Is this specific product GI certified?
No. This pack is sold as Kashmiri Mongra saffron without a GI claim. A separate GI-tagged pack is listed in our saffron collection.
Is a lab test report available?
An independent lab report for our saffron is published on our Lab Reports & Certifications page. For questions about the batch you will receive, message us on WhatsApp before ordering.
How do I use it in milk, kahwa or biryani?
Always soak first. Crush a few threads lightly, soak in a few spoons of warm milk or water for 10–20 minutes, then add both the liquid and the threads. See the usage guide above for amounts.
How should I store it?
Tightly closed, in a cool, dark, dry cupboard away from the stove. Use it by the date on the pack.
What delivery and return conditions apply?
Shipping is free across India. Orders are dispatched within 24–48 hours from Pampore with a GST invoice. COD and returns are on our Delivery Information and Returns pages.
Can I order larger quantities?
Yes. For 10 g and above, or kilogram orders for shops, restaurants and resale, see our saffron wholesale range or message us on WhatsApp.
