GI-Tagged Kashmiri Saffron

Same flower. Same grade. Documented origin.

Grade 1 Mongra saffron from the recognised Kashmir saffron belt, sold with its geographical-indication provenance. What you are paying extra for is the paperwork, not better threads — and we would rather say that plainly.

What A GI Tag Is

A statement about place, not about quality

A Geographical Indication is a legal mark that ties a product to a defined place of origin — the same idea that governs Darjeeling tea or Champagne. For saffron it certifies that the crop came from the recognised Kashmir saffron belt and moved through the registered traceability process.

It is worth being precise about what that does and does not mean. A GI tag guarantees where the saffron grew and that its journey was documented. It does not, by itself, mean the strands are finer than saffron of the same grade sold without one.

Honest Answer

The difference between our two saffron packs

"Both are Grade 1 Mongra from Pampore. One carries documentation."

We sell two saffron products and people reasonably ask what separates them. The honest answer: the saffron itself is the same grade — Mongra, red stigma tips with the pale style cut away, from Pampore. In a kheer or a biryani you will not tell them apart.

What this pack adds is certified, documented origin. That genuinely matters for gifting where provenance is the point, for corporate or institutional buying, for resale, and for anyone who simply wants the certified pack. If you are cooking at home, our standard Mongra saffron does the identical job for less, and we would rather you spent the difference on something else.

Using It

Soak it, do not sprinkle it

Crush a pinch lightly between your fingers. Broken threads release colour far more readily than whole ones.

Soak in warm milk or water for ten minutes until the liquid turns deep gold — that is the saffron actually working.

Add liquid and threads together to kheer, biryani, pulao, kahwa or halwa.

Use less than you think. Ten to fifteen threads is a family dish; a gram covers fifteen to twenty servings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Good to know

What is a GI tag on Kashmiri saffron?

A Geographical Indication is a legal mark tying a product to a defined place of origin. For saffron it certifies the crop was grown in the recognised Kashmir saffron belt and passed through the registered traceability process. It is a statement about origin, not about strand quality.

Is GI-tagged saffron better quality?

Not in itself. Both our saffron packs are Grade 1 Mongra from Pampore — the same flower, the same grade of strand. What the GI pack adds is documented origin and traceability.

Who actually needs this pack?

Buyers who need documentation: gifting where provenance matters, corporate or institutional purchase, resale, or anyone who wants the certified-origin pack. For everyday home cooking our standard Mongra performs identically for less.

How much do I need for a dish?

A pinch of ten to fifteen threads for a family-sized dish. One gram covers roughly fifteen to twenty servings, so a one gram pack lasts most households months.

How should I store it?

Sealed, away from light, heat and moisture. Light dulls saffron faster than age does. Stored properly the aroma holds well for up to two years.
