Heavier is the point, not a drawback

People often try walnut oil expecting it to behave like almond oil and find it sits on the hair longer. That is the oil doing what it is meant to. It is thicker, it absorbs more slowly, and it stays on the strand for longer — which is precisely why it suits dry, rough or winter hair.

If you want something to put on in the morning before work, almond oil is the right choice. Walnut oil is for the night before a wash, and for hair that needs more than a light conditioning.

Walnut carries more oil than almost any nut and that oil is more fragile than most. Left on a sunny shelf or near a stove, a bottle of walnut oil will turn stale considerably faster than a bottle of almond oil would.

A healthy bottle smells nutty and slightly sweet. If it ever smells sharp, bitter or faintly like paint, that is rancidity and the bottle should be thrown out rather than used on your hair or skin. Keep it closed, out of sunlight, and refrigerate it through summer if you get through it slowly.

Give it the night

Warm a small amount between your palms — less than you would use of a lighter oil.

Massage into the scalp and work through to the ends, concentrating on the dry lower half.

Leave for an hour or overnight, then wash properly. Being heavier, it needs a real wash rather than a rinse.

On skin, use very little and at night. If your skin is oily, use almond oil instead. Patch test first.
