The Piece
Why the pheran is shaped the way it is
The pheran is not a kurta cut long. It is a loose outer gown with wide sleeves and a generous body, designed to be worn over whatever else you have on and to hold warm air around you rather than fit close to the skin. That looseness is the function, not a styling choice — which is why a pheran in size 50 is meant to hang, not to fit like a 50.
This is an everyday version rather than a heavy ceremonial one. The embroidery sits where it has always sat on a working pheran: a broad yoke around the neck, and narrow borders at the cuffs, the side slits and the hem. The body itself is left plain, which keeps it light and keeps the price where it should be.
Fabric
What Kashmilon actually is
"The everyday cloth of Kashmiri wardrobes."
Kashmilon is the name used across Kashmir for a soft acrylic weave made to handle like fine wool. It is light, warm for its weight, and holds chain-stitch embroidery cleanly without sagging under it.
We label it as acrylic rather than calling it wool, because the differences run both ways and buyers deserve to know them. Kashmilon is not as warm as pure wool and will not last generations. In exchange it costs a fraction as much, does not attract moths, does not shrink, and can be washed gently at home — which is exactly why most pherans worn day to day in Kashmir are made from it rather than from wool saved for occasions.
Honest labelling: this is a Kashmilon (acrylic) pheran, not wool or pashmina. Anything sold as pure wool at this price is worth a second look.

Buying Notes
What to check on a pheran
- Ask what the fabric is. Kashmilon, wool and pashmina are three different things at three very different prices.
- Check whether the hem and slits are worked. Yoke-only embroidery is the cheaper build.
- The yoke should sit symmetrically around the neck opening, not drift to one side.
- Both cuffs should carry matching borders, not just one.
- A pheran should hang loose. If it fits close, it has been cut as a kurta.
- Check the reverse of the yoke for backing left stiff or scratchy against the neck.
Styling
How to wear it
1Over a plain kurta or top — the traditional way, and what the loose cut is designed for.
2On its own — with churidar or straight pants underneath for an everyday look.
3Over a warm layer in winter — this weight works as the outer layer rather than the warm one.
4Keep jewellery light — the yoke is already doing the work at the neck.

Care
Easier than wool, but not careless
This is one of the advantages of Kashmilon: unlike wool, it can be washed at home. Use cold water and a mild detergent, and keep the handling gentle — do not wring, and do not brush the embroidered areas, where chain stitch pulls loose first. Dry clean is fine too if you would rather not risk it.
Dry it in shade and inside out; direct sun fades a strong red faster than it fades the threadwork. Iron on the reverse at a low setting, keeping the plate off the yoke, and wash it separately the first couple of times — a red this deep releases dye early and it will find the pale embroidery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Good to know
What is a pheran?
The pheran is the traditional Kashmiri outer garment — a long, loose gown with wide sleeves, worn over other clothes through the colder months. This is a lighter everyday version rather than a heavy winter one.
What is Kashmilon fabric?
Kashmilon is the name used across Kashmir for a soft acrylic weave made to handle like fine wool. It is light, warm for its weight, moth-proof, does not shrink and can be washed gently at home.
Where is the embroidery placed?
A large worked yoke around the neckline in yellow, sage green and blue, with matching borders at both cuffs, along the side slits and around the scalloped hem.
What size is this pheran?
Size 50 — a generous, loose fit as a pheran is meant to be. Message us before ordering if you would like the exact chest and length measurements.
Is it warm enough for winter?
It is a light-to-medium layer rather than a heavy winter pheran. It works on its own through autumn and spring, and over a warmer layer in deep winter.
How do I care for it?
Gentle cold hand wash with a mild detergent, or dry clean. Do not wring or brush the embroidered areas. Dry in shade, inside out, and iron on the reverse avoiding the threadwork.
