Lavender Essential Oil
Never neat on skin. Always diluted.
A concentrated aromatherapy oil for diffusing, for scenting a room or linen, and for blending into a carrier oil. Two or three drops is a full dose — this is not a product you pour.

Essential oil is not a body oil
This is the point that matters most and gets said least. An essential oil is the concentrated aromatic extract of a plant, not a moisturising oil like almond or coconut. Applied neat to skin it can irritate, and on sensitive skin it can do so badly.
The correct way to use it on skin is diluted in a carrier oil — a few drops of lavender per tablespoon of almond or coconut oil. That is not us being cautious; it is how essential oils are meant to be used, and anyone telling you otherwise is not doing you a favour.
Worth Knowing
Essential oil or fragrance oil
"If a lavender oil is very cheap and smells identical every time, ask what it is."
Two quite different things sit on shelves under similar labels. An essential oil is distilled from the plant. A fragrance oil is a manufactured scent made to smell like it — cheaper to produce, perfectly legal, and not the same product.
A practical tell: distilled oils vary a little between batches because plants do, while a manufactured fragrance is identical every time. Price is the other signal. Neither is dangerous, but you should know which one you are buying.

Using It
Four sensible ways
Diffuse it. Three to five drops in a diffuser scents a room. In a closed room the scent builds, so start low.
Scent linen and cupboards with a drop or two on a cotton pad tucked at the back of a shelf.
Blend for massage — a few drops into a tablespoon of almond oil, never applied neat.
Patch test any blend on the inner arm before using it more widely.

Frequently Asked Questions
Good to know
Can I apply it directly to skin?
No. Essential oils are highly concentrated and should be diluted in a carrier oil such as almond or coconut before touching skin. A common guide is a few drops per tablespoon of carrier oil.
How do I use it for scent?
A few drops in a diffuser, or on a tissue or cotton pad tucked near a pillow. It can also go into a warm bath or laundry rinse water. The scent builds in a closed room, so start low.
Essential oil or fragrance oil — what is the difference?
An essential oil is distilled from the plant itself. A fragrance oil is a manufactured scent that smells similar. Essential oils cost more, vary a little batch to batch, and evaporate differently.
Is it safe around children and pets?
Keep it out of reach of children and never let it be swallowed. Some pets, cats in particular, are sensitive to diffused oils, so ventilate and do not diffuse where an animal cannot leave the room.
How should I store it?
Tightly closed, upright, cool and dark. Light and air degrade essential oils, which is why they are sold in dark glass rather than clear bottles or plastic.
