How It Actually Works

Hyaluronic acid holds water. It does not create it.

This one fact explains everything about using it well. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant — it grabs water and holds it near the surface of the skin. That is the entire mechanism.

So the water has to be there. Applied to damp skin, it holds the moisture sitting on your face. Applied to bone-dry skin in a dry room, it can pull moisture from deeper in your own skin instead, which is exactly why some people report that a hyaluronic serum left their face feeling tighter than before.

Serums feel like the sophisticated step, so plenty of people buy one and stop there. With a hydrating serum that is a mistake. Water held at the surface will simply evaporate unless something is placed over it.

A moisturiser on top is what turns the serum into a result. If you own only one of the two, the cream is the more important purchase — and we would rather say that than sell you the dearer bottle.

The order matters more than the product

Cleanse, then tone — and do not dry the face fully. Slightly damp is the goal.

Three or four drops, pressed into the face and neck rather than rubbed in.

Follow with a moisturiser within a minute, before the serum dries down. This step is not optional.

Patch test first, and keep the bottle closed and out of direct sunlight.

Why apply it to damp skin?

Hyaluronic acid works by holding water. On damp skin it holds the water sitting there. On dry skin in a dry room it can draw moisture from deeper in the skin instead, which is why some people find it leaves their face tighter.

Do I still need a moisturiser?

Yes, and it matters more with a hyaluronic serum than most. The serum brings water to the surface; a cream on top stops it evaporating. Serum alone is half the job.

Is hyaluronic acid harsh?

Despite the name it is not an exfoliating acid and does not cause peeling. It is a hydrating ingredient and suits most skin types including oily and sensitive.

How many drops?

Three or four for the whole face. Serums are concentrated and more will not absorb any better, so a 30ml bottle lasts a long time.

Morning or night?

Either, and both if you like. It sits comfortably under sunscreen and makeup in the morning and under a night cream in the evening.
