Hyaluronic acid holds water. It does not create it.
This one fact explains everything about using it well. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant — it grabs water and holds it near the surface of the skin. That is the entire mechanism.
So the water has to be there. Applied to damp skin, it holds the moisture sitting on your face. Applied to bone-dry skin in a dry room, it can pull moisture from deeper in your own skin instead, which is exactly why some people report that a hyaluronic serum left their face feeling tighter than before.

Using It
The order matters more than the product
Cleanse, then tone — and do not dry the face fully. Slightly damp is the goal.
Three or four drops, pressed into the face and neck rather than rubbed in.
Follow with a moisturiser within a minute, before the serum dries down. This step is not optional.
Patch test first, and keep the bottle closed and out of direct sunlight.
