Sweet almond oil and bitter almond oil are not the same

Two quite different oils get sold under the word almond. Sweet almond oil is pressed from the almonds you eat, and it is the one used on hair and skin the world over. Bitter almond oil comes from a different variety, is far stronger, and is not meant for general cosmetic use.

This is sweet almond oil. If you have been given a bottle at some point and found it harsh or overpowering, it is worth checking which of the two it actually was.

The commonest complaint about any facial or hair oil is that it feels heavy and sits on the surface. Nine times out of ten the oil is fine and the amount is wrong. Almond oil is light, but no oil absorbs if you pour it on.

For the face, three or four drops warmed between the palms is the whole application. For hair, a small amount worked from roots to ends, not a palmful. Used that way a bottle lasts months — which is the other thing nobody tells you before you buy.

Using It

Warm it first, always

Warm the oil between your palms for a few seconds. Cold oil spreads badly and you end up using twice as much.

For hair: work from the scalp to the ends, massaging as you go, and leave for at least thirty minutes or overnight before washing.

For skin: three or four drops on clean skin, pressed in rather than rubbed. Also works to take off makeup.

Patch test first on the inner arm before you use any new oil on your face.
