Kashmiri Kaftans
Every kaftan here is hand-embroidered in Kashmir — Aari hook work, laid stitch by stitch by karigars in Pampore. Long and short, in cotton, chiffon, crush and tie-dye. Nothing on this page came off a machine head.
A kaftan is the least demanding garment there is: one piece, cut loose, and the outfit is finished. Put real handwork on it and it stops being basic without ever becoming difficult.
₹950 – ₹1,700
Hand-embroidered, at roughly what a machine-printed kaftan costs on a marketplace. We are in the valley and we buy from the karigars directly — that is the entire reason the price works, and it is not a discount.
Long or short
- Long kaftans — fifteen designs, ₹1,500–1,700. Full drop, worn as the whole outfit. Cotton, chiffon, crush and tie-dye grounds.
- Short kaftans — seven designs, ₹950. Cotton and poly-cotton. Worn as a top, a cover-up, or the easiest thing in the cupboard.
Where the handwork sits
Aari is worked with a fine hook from the face of the fabric, in a continuous chain stitch. On these kaftans it runs across the yoke, around the neckline, or up into full-neck work — floral sprays and paisley, the same motif vocabulary Kashmiri karigars have used for generations.
Questions people ask us
What is a kaftan?
A loose, straight-cut garment with no fitted waist, worn as a single piece. It travelled across Persia, Turkey and North Africa before it ever reached a resort catalogue. What makes these Kashmiri is not the cut — it is the Aari handwork on them.
Kaftan or caftan?
Same garment, two spellings. Neither is wrong; the word simply travelled by different routes into English. Search either way and you will find the same thing.
How do I know the embroidery is handmade?
Turn it over. Handwork leaves knots, thread ends and honest irregularity on the reverse. Machine embroidery is flat and identical on the back, and its repeated motifs match to the millimetre. Compare two motifs on the same garment — if they differ slightly, a person made them.
What do I wear under a kaftan?
The long ones need nothing — they are the outfit. The short ones are worn as a top, so pair them with whatever you already reach for.
Is a kaftan good for summer?
The cotton and poly-cotton pieces are made for it — loose cut, breathable ground, nothing clinging. Chiffon leans towards resort and evening.
How do I wash a hand-embroidered kaftan?
Cold hand wash, mild detergent, no wringing, dry in shade. Handwork lasts years if it is treated gently. Care details are on each product page.
Are these really made in Kashmir?
Yes. We are in Kadlabal, Pampore, and we buy from the karigars directly — no middle agent, no machine substitute.
Long or short, cotton or chiffon — not sure? Message us on WhatsApp and tell us how you actually plan to wear it. We will narrow it down, and say so if nothing we stock fits.
