Pala Stole — Black

Marigolds at the edge of black.

A black Tusha stole with the embroidery gathered where it shows — a broad band of yellow and orange marigolds with sage leaves running across the ends and corner, and a plain field left open behind it.

The Piece

What pala means, and why it matters

Pala is the worked end panel of a stole. On a pala piece the design is concentrated there — a broad floral band sweeping across the two ends and turning the corner — while the rest of the cloth is left open, carrying only a few single flower sprigs scattered lightly across the field.

That is a design decision, not a shortcut. When a stole is draped, the ends are what fall to the front and the field mostly disappears into folds. Putting the work where it is seen gives you the same visible effect as a heavier piece at a fraction of the price — and on black, an open field is the point. The marigolds have somewhere to sit.

Fabric & Colour

Marigold on black

"Black takes warm colour better than any other ground."

Tusha is the base here — the soft, lightweight fabric Kashmir uses for most of its embroidered stoles. It drapes easily, sits gently against the skin, and is warmer and more affordable than pashmina, which is what makes it the sensible choice for a stole meant to be used rather than saved for occasions.

The band on it is built around two flower sizes: large open marigolds in deep orange and softer yellow daisies, linked by dusty pink stems and pale sage leaves. Small clustered buds fill the gaps so the band reads as continuous rather than as separate motifs pinned in a row. Two fine wave lines in pink and orange run underneath, closing it cleanly against the plain cloth.

Black does something specific for this palette. It absorbs light rather than reflecting it, so warm yellows and oranges sit forward off the surface instead of blending into the ground the way they would on beige or cream. It is also the most forgiving ground to own — marks and everyday wear show far less than on a pale stole.

A crafted textile: slight variation in stitch density, thread shade and motif placement between pieces is normal in Kashmiri embroidery and is not a defect.

Buying Notes

Pala or full coverage — which to buy

  • Ask how much of the cloth is worked. It is the single biggest driver of price.
  • A pala piece shows almost as much when draped, because the ends fall to the front.
  • A jama or fully covered piece is the one to buy if you want the whole cloth worked.
  • Tusha and pashmina are different fabrics at very different prices. A pashmina claim at a Tusha price is a warning.
  • Look at where the band ends — a good piece closes it with a line, not an abrupt stop.
  • Dark grounds hide wear well, which makes them the sensible choice for everyday use.
Styling

How to wear it

1

Let the ends fall forward — the whole design is at the ends, so drape it so they sit at the front rather than behind the shoulder.

2

Over mustard, rust or cream — pick up the marigold shades in the outfit and the band ties the whole look together.

3

Over black — the stole disappears into the outfit and only the embroidery reads, which is the most formal way to wear it.

4

Daily use — light enough for a shawl through the day and dark enough not to show it.

Care

Keeping black black

Black cloth has one weakness: it fades. Washing at home and long spells in direct sunlight both pull the depth out of the dye, and once a black stole has gone grey-brown there is no bringing it back. Dry clean only — no washing at home, no wringing, no bleach.

Store it folded in cotton or muslin rather than plastic, keep a natural moth repellent nearby, and dry it in shade if it ever gets damp. Lint and stray thread show more on black than on any other colour, so a soft brush now and then keeps it looking new.

Want it in another colour?

Pala designs can be worked on other ground shades, and we carry heavier fully embroidered stoles too. Message us before ordering and we'll send options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Good to know

What is a pala stole?

Pala refers to the worked end panel. On a pala piece the embroidery is concentrated in a broad floral band across the two ends and along the corner, with the rest of the field left plain apart from a few scattered single flowers.

What fabric is this stole?

Tusha — a soft, lightweight fabric used widely in Kashmir for embroidered stoles. It drapes easily and is warmer and more affordable than pashmina.

Why does it cost less than a fully embroidered stole?

Because far less of the cloth is worked. A jama piece has embroidery across the entire ground and takes many times longer to complete. A pala piece concentrates the work where it is seen, which is why it sits at a much lower price.

What colours are in the embroidery?

Marigold yellow and orange flowers with sage green leaves, dusty pink stems, and a fine pink and orange wave line closing the band — all on a black ground.

Is the whole stole plain apart from the ends?

Almost. Small single flower sprigs are scattered lightly across the open field so it does not read as completely bare, but the main design sits at the ends and corner.

How do I care for it?

Dry clean only. No washing at home, no wringing, no bleach. Store folded in cotton or muslin rather than plastic, with a natural moth repellent nearby.
