Designed around the way a shrug is worn

A shrug is worn open, which means the two front panels are what people actually see — and that is exactly where the work sits here. Two tall flowering vines climb the full length of the front, one on each side, growing from a small base at the hem up to a large blue bloom near the shoulder. Between them, a narrow band of blue and teal blossoms runs around the neckline and straight down the centre opening, framing whatever is worn underneath.

The back is deliberately quiet: one bouquet motif at the centre and nothing else. It keeps the piece from feeling heavy, and it means the shrug reads as an outfit rather than as a garment competing with the one below it.

How to wear it

Easier than wool, but not careless

This is one of the advantages of Kashmilon: unlike wool or an embroidered silk, it can be washed at home. Use cold water and a mild detergent, and keep the handling gentle — do not wring, and do not brush the embroidered areas, which is where chain stitch pulls loose. Dry clean is fine too if you would rather not risk it.

Dry it in shade and inside out; direct sun fades bright threadwork faster than it fades the cloth. Iron on the reverse at a low setting, keeping the plate off the vines. And because the ground is off white, keep it away from perfume and make-up while dressing.
