Jama Tusha Stole — Navy Blue

White ferns over deep navy.

A Jama machine manual stole on a Tusha base — the navy ground filled edge to edge with white fern and vine work, punctuated by large red and rose blooms, and closed with a multi-band floral border.

The Piece

Jama machine manual — what the name means

Two words, two different things. Jama describes the coverage: the embroidery runs across the entire ground rather than sitting in a border or a few scattered motifs. Machine manual describes how it is worked — on a manually operated chain-stitch machine, with the artisan guiding the cloth and steering every curve by hand. Nothing is computerised and nothing is automated; the operator is drawing with the needle.

That method is what makes a design like this one possible at this price. The white fern work here runs in continuous curling sprays across the whole field, thousands of small strokes that would take months by plain needle. Worked on a manual machine, the same density arrives in a fraction of the time — and because a person is still steering it, the curves stay fluid rather than mechanical.

Fabric & Colour

White on navy, with red doing the punctuation

"The strongest contrast in the whole colour wheel, used properly."

Tusha is the base — the soft, lightweight fabric Kashmir uses for most of its embroidered stoles. It drapes easily, sits gently against the skin, and has enough body to carry embroidery this dense without puckering or losing its fall.

On it, white thread against a deep navy ground gives the sharpest contrast available, which is why the fern work reads so clearly even from a distance. If the whole design were white it would flatten into a blur; instead, large red and rose flowers with olive leaves and rust stems are set at intervals across the field to break it up and give the eye somewhere to land. The border does the same job at the edges — bands of red berries, pink blossoms, olive leaves and a white leaf run stacked between fine wave lines, with a plain navy panel left at the ends below.

A crafted textile: slight variation in stitch density, thread shade and motif placement between pieces is normal in Kashmiri embroidery and is not a defect.

Buying Notes

How to judge a jama piece

  • Ask how much of the cloth is worked. Full-ground jama and border-only pieces are priced worlds apart.
  • On dense white work, look for even stitch height — patchy density is where corners get cut.
  • Check that the curves stay fluid. Stiff, repetitive shapes mean the work was rushed.
  • Tusha and pashmina are different fabrics at very different prices. A pashmina claim at a Tusha price is a warning.
  • Look at the border corners — badly planned pieces cut the bands off mid-motif where they meet.
  • Navy shows white lint. Not a fault, just something to keep a brush handy for.
Styling

How to wear it

1

Over plain white or ivory — the cleanest pairing. The white in the embroidery ties straight into the outfit and the navy frames it.

2

Over navy or black — the ground disappears into the outfit and only the white and red read, which is the most formal way to wear it.

3

Pick up the red — a red blouse or kurta under it pulls the scattered flowers forward across the whole piece.

4

Keep the outfit plain — this is a busy stole. Print under print will fight it.

Care

Protecting white thread on a dark ground

White on navy is the one combination where a dye run is unmistakable. If the navy bleeds even slightly in water, it settles into the white thread and greys the whole field — and that cannot be undone. Dry clean only — no washing at home, no wringing, no bleach, no spot-cleaning.

Store it folded in cotton or muslin rather than plastic, keep a natural moth repellent nearby, and keep it out of direct sunlight, which dulls navy faster than most colours. A soft brush now and then lifts the lint that dark cloth attracts.

Want it in another colour?

This design can be worked on other ground shades, and we carry lighter pala pieces and heavier needle-worked stoles too. Message us before ordering and we'll send options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Good to know

What is a Jama machine manual stole?

Jama means the embroidery covers the entire ground rather than sitting only in a border. Machine manual refers to how it is worked — on a manually operated chain-stitch machine, guided stitch by stitch by the artisan rather than run by a computer.

What fabric is this stole?

Tusha — a soft, lightweight fabric used widely in Kashmir for embroidered stoles. It drapes easily and is warmer and more affordable than pashmina.

What colours are in the design?

A navy blue ground almost entirely covered in white fern and vine work, with large red and rose flowers, olive green leaves and rust stems. The border runs in bands of red, pink, olive and white.

Is the whole stole covered?

Almost all of it. The white fern work fills the field from edge to edge, with only a plain navy panel left at the two ends below the border bands.

Will two pieces look exactly the same?

Slight variation in colour placement and motif detail is normal between pieces, and screen colours may differ a little from the actual shade of the cloth.

How do I care for it?

Dry clean only. White thread on a navy ground is exactly the combination that suffers if colours run, so home washing is not worth the risk.
