Jali Tusha Stole — Berry

A vine that never stops.

A Tusha stole worked in jali — one continuous lattice of stems curling across the whole cloth, with small blossoms opening where the vine turns. Three grounds to choose from, each with its own palette.

The Piece

Jali — the lattice, not the blanket

Jali means a lattice or screen. On a stole it describes an open, continuous vine that travels across the whole cloth in loops and curls, leaving the ground clearly visible between the stems. It is not the same as a jama, where the embroidery fills the field solidly and the base almost disappears.

That difference is the reason to choose one over the other. A jama piece is a statement and priced like one. A jali piece gives you the same continuous, all-over movement across the cloth at a fraction of the work — and because the ground keeps showing through, the colour of the stole stays part of the design rather than being buried under thread.

Fabric & Work

Tusha base, chain stitch vine

"An open design has nowhere to hide a wobbling line."

Tusha is the soft, lightweight fabric Kashmir uses for most of its embroidered stoles. It drapes easily, sits gently against the skin, and is warmer and more affordable than pashmina — which makes it the sensible base for a stole meant to be worn regularly rather than saved for occasions.

The design is worked in chain stitch, and on a jali the quality of that line is the whole piece. With the ground exposed on both sides of every stem, an unsteady curve shows immediately — there is no surrounding fill to absorb it. The long unbroken curls running across these stoles are the test being passed, and they are what separates a good jali from a cheap one.

A crafted textile: slight variation in stitch density, thread shade and motif placement between pieces is normal in Kashmiri embroidery and is not a defect.
Colours

Three grounds, three different moods

1

Berry — a deep plum-wine ground with sage green vines and blossoms in coral, apricot, cream and butter yellow. The warmest and most traditional of the three.

2

Black — peach and gold vines with soft yellow and green blooms. The most formal option, and the easiest to keep clean.

3

Pink — a bright rose ground with cream vines and pale coral flowers. The lightest and most summery.

Buying Notes

How to judge a jali stole

  • Follow one vine with your eye. It should run continuously, not stop and restart.
  • Curves are the test. Wobbling or flattened curls mean rushed work.
  • Check the spacing — a good jali fills the cloth evenly, without bare patches or crowded corners.
  • Jali and jama are different densities at very different prices. Know which you are buying.
  • Tusha and pashmina are different fabrics. A pashmina claim at a Tusha price is a warning.
  • On an open design the reverse is visible through the gaps. It should be tidy.
Styling

How to wear it

1

Over solid colours — the vine reads clearly against a plain outfit, and the ground colour does the rest.

2

Match the vine, not the ground — picking up one of the flower shades in your outfit ties the look together better than matching the base colour.

3

Everyday wear — light enough to carry through the day rather than only at functions.

4

As a gift — three colours means there is usually one that suits, and it sits at an easy price point for gifting.

Care

Looking after an open design

Embroidered Tusha is not a wash-and-wear textile. Water and detergent loosen the threadwork, and on a strong ground colour any dye that runs settles straight into the pale vines and flowers. Dry clean only — no washing at home, no wringing, no bleach.

One thing worth knowing about jali specifically: because the stems sit proud of an otherwise open surface, they catch on jewellery, watch straps and bag zips more easily than a dense design would. Fold it along the existing folds, keep it wrapped in cotton or muslin rather than plastic, and keep a natural moth repellent nearby.

Frequently Asked Questions

Good to know

What is a jali stole?

Jali refers to a lattice — an open, continuous vine travelling across the whole cloth in loops and curls rather than covering it solidly. The ground stays visible between the stems, which makes a jali piece lighter to look at than a fully covered jama.

What fabric is this stole?

Tusha — a soft, lightweight fabric used widely in Kashmir for embroidered stoles. It drapes easily and is warmer and more affordable than pashmina.

Which colours are available?

Berry, black and pink. Each has the same jali vine design worked in a palette chosen to suit that ground.

Is this the same as a jama stole?

No. A jama piece is covered solidly and the base almost disappears under the threadwork. A jali piece keeps the ground visible between open, curling stems, which is why it is lighter to look at and sits at a lower price.

Will two pieces look exactly the same?

Slight variation in colour placement and motif detail is normal between pieces, and screen colours may differ a little from the actual shade of the cloth.

How do I care for it?

Dry clean only. No washing at home, no wringing, no bleach. Store folded in cotton or muslin rather than plastic, with a natural moth repellent nearby.
