The quiet one in the range

Most Kashmiri embroidered accessories go loud — a strong ground colour with bright thread on top, made to be noticed across a room. This one is built the other way. Sage green, dusty rose and peach sit close together in tone, so the whole piece reads as soft rather than bright, and the design shows itself gradually instead of all at once.

The vines are doing most of the work. Rather than scattering separate flowers across the panel, the artisan has run continuous rose-coloured stems from a central stalk, letting them curl and double back so the pattern fills the space evenly. The flowers sit where the vines open up, each with a dark centre that keeps it from dissolving into the pale ground around it.

Looking after a pale clutch

A clutch cannot be dry cleaned or soaked — it has a zip, a stiffened body and a trim that water will ruin. Spot clean with a dry cloth only. For a mark on the embroidery, dab gently with a barely damp cloth and let it air dry away from heat.

A sage ground needs a little more discipline than a dark one, since marks stay visible. Two habits cover most of it: keep it out of direct sunlight, which dulls soft colours faster than strong ones, and store it in a cloth pouch rather than loose in a drawer, where zips and buckles from other items catch on chain stitch and pull threads.
